Amazon photography – Ion Sei

I was actually contacted for this project after originally being ‘rejected’ in favour of another product lifestyle photographer. that photographer didn’t get back to the client promptly and so they got in touch with me.

I could offer product lifestyle photography with:

A fast turnaround

Great prices

Great quality photography for the budget.

The brief was pretty simple, whilst also being quite specific – great quality ecom shots for Amazon, at very specific angles and colour corrected to be in keeping with the existing imagery.

Lifestyle photography and Ecommerce photography for Supplements

Here is a recent project i worked as a product lifestyle photographer on for a new supplement brand.

The brief was to explore the the two polar opposites of the two supplements within lifestyle imagery and create consistent ecommerce ‘amazon ready’ imagery for them also.

0W1A3869_compiled

Relax – A herbal supplement to calm and relax.

These product lifestyle shots were photographed with natural light , soft focus and using textures and colours to represent the calming, relaxing and femininity.

Focus – A caffeine based supplement to improve focus, alertness and stamina.

These lifestyle product photographs were shot on dark masculine textures and gym equipment using harsh studio flash.

Lux Light – Game Changing Modifiers

Good Studio Flash lighting is Imperative for any professional fashion photographer, professional beauty photographer or still life photographer.

I have recently been lucky enough to be in receipt of two absolutely incredible modifiers by a new photographic brand Lux Light

These are Pop light modifiers for bowens mount lighting. Now i know that bowens have gone bust – #RIPBOWENS but the fabulous Godox ranges are bowens fit so they are keeping the S ring alive and kicking.

(Speaking of the Godox Ranges, in short they’re great. Wildly cheaper than Profoto, but with essentially all the same features…. maybe i’ll do a separate post about these)

Anyway, back to the LUX light range :

Globe – for portraits, interior photography and fashion photography.

– The perfect All-Rounder! (no pun intended)

I don’t want to sound too eager, but i think this globe may have changed my life a little bit.

Unlike standard soft boxes which require building, the globe pops open with one push and hooks on a catch to remain open. One push of a button and it can be closed again.

It took me a couple of practice goes trying to get it to stay up because i didn’t realise that there was a button… duh! but once i got it to stay up (oi oi!) it works incredibly well.

The globe is perfect for location photography work, as transporting it is very easy. it also comes in its own heavy duty carrier case. As a photographer who does a lot of location photography and outdoor brand campaign photo work, this is truly a gift. so easily portable.

It gives a super soft dispersed light with large round catchlights, which is excellent for portrait and beauty work. The 360 ability of this light makes it equally perfect for interior photography or can be used as a all round fill. Perfect for the portrait and beauty photographer. Here is one of the shots i have used this modifier for:

Beauty-photography-sophie-jade-portrait

Softly lit portait of Sohie-Jade using the Lux Light Globe

On a product front, it arrived very quickly, was packaged well, and It appears to be very well made, and quite sturdy.

This light is definitely now a staple of my photography kit.

If you’re interested in getting one of these bad boys for your portrait or interior work, you can buy them Here.

Strip Softbox – for product shots & skim lights on models.

I have previously been a loyal customer of calumet, then Wex for all my photographic needs. Lux Lights has definitely changed that.

This soft box is a fraction of the price of the big retailers, and is sooo much better.
It Pops up in seconds like a brolly, so no more awkward and time-consuming building of softboxes.
This strip soft box gives a much softer directional light than most thanks to the diffuser panel inner.
Its very lightweight, so doesn’t put any strain on the angle joint of your flash head, and is great for location work.

And it comes with grids so you don’t have to purchase them separately!
(it also came with a cute little grey card pack as a little present.)

I’m definitely going to get another one of these to even out my skim lights on subjects.

Lux lights  are perfect for:

Lifestyle Photography – House of Fraser Christmas Campaign

Casual and natural, Photographing a christmas brand campaign.

Rather than using models for the ‘Over to Ours’ campaign, we shot fashion influencers in the comfort of their own homes. The concept being that the influencers are inviting customers ‘over to theirs’ to be inspired by House of Fraser’s Christmas fashion and beauty offerings.

Capturing off guard moments aimed show fashion, accessories and interiors in real life settings, making products feel aspirational and authentic.

The shots should:

•Feel relaxed, warm and in-the-moment.

•Be like moments from the influencers’ own social feeds.

•Show their home surroundings.

•Not be posed or staged.

•Showcase fashion and beauty as a priority, with some Christmas home decorations in some shots.

BRKE Retouch Project

Creative retouching for an album cover.

This was for a single cover for singer BRKE (pronounced Brooke).

The original image is below (i’ve pixelated it, to retain her modesty), but you get the idea, its a simple white background shot of her wearing a green jacket. The brief was to make it decadent and glamorous with a hint of fantasy.

original unretouched BLURRED.jpg

*IMAGES WERE NOT SHOT BY ME*

And here is the finished image. As you can see, it was an extensive retouch, mainly in the creation of the jacket which was priced together partly from elements of an existing jacket, and partly hand drawn. The sky and overall tone of the image was the other major part of the works, get the ethereal feel whilst retaining her look.

And here is the finished single cover produced by Mad Moves Records.

Here is a layer reveal video to show how the image is built up and layered together.

If you want to know a bit more about BRKE and her single then there’s a fab article HERE.

The Longest Day Ever….

Popular option says that millennial have no work ethic.

I just wanted to share a little anecdote which was so super bizarre that i couldn’t help but share.

My team and I have just returned from a 4 day shoot with for fashion retailers Christmas campaign. I will update this post once the images are released.

We travelled round central London shooting at influencers in their homes. Great concept for a Christmas Campaign with influencers in their own homes.

We were staying in London for the 4 days of shooting, travelling around the various different areas in Central London.

At dinner on the second night I thought I may have pulled a muscle in my back from carrying hefty kit around. Fast forward to 2am the next morning and I am writhing around in agony in bed, 2 codeine later and I’m still in ferocious pain clawing in my back, and I’m feverish. I already had an inkling what this was, but I needed to find out for sure and get it sorted cause we had 2 more days of shooting.

A 3am taxi ride later and a couple of hours in the waiting room, I am admitted to the A&E in the West Middlesex University Hospital. The fabulous and professional nurses and doctors there had me hooked up to Intraveinous painkillers, took blood and urine samples for testing, and subsequently gave me I.V. And oral Antibiotics and discharges me just in time to set off to the shoot.
With a night of a couple of hours sleep and 5 hours in A&E, still bandaged up (though I did remember to remove my hospital tag!) I went to a shoot in a gorgeous part of London. I didn’t tell anyone apart from my own photographic and video team about what had happened the previous night, as I didn’t want to kill the vibe of the shoot. I actually wore make up… and those who know me, will know that is a rarity…. but thank goodness for Charlotte Tilburys magic concealer. My guys were so lovely and looked after me wonderfully – wouldn’t let me carry anything, and made sure i stayed hydrated and ate enough.

Now this post is not here to toot my own horn. (and just as an addition to this post, my boyfriend was FURIOUS with me about the whole thing…. well…. not the being ill part…. but the rest)

However, i’m not sure how many young (or not so young in my case) professionals would go and fulfil a high pressure days work, with a kidney infection, after almost no sleep and 5 hours in A&E.

So there it is…. the show must go on…. and at some point i’ll take a nap.

Kinfolk Shoot – Location model photography

IMG_5018

I have been feeling a bit restless recently from having a lot of still life shoots on.

As a Product  LOVE shooting still life… there is something so wonderfully serene about just pootling along in a room on my own, arranging beautiful products in natural light or the studio, or executing complicated lighting setups for intricate bottles. Its a very relaxing process but it can also be….. for want of a better phrase….. a bit samey.

So i decided to venture back into the world of TFP.

I wanted an industrial amish chic shoot, with muted tones and a simplistic theme. Think somewhere between Pride and prejudice, and game of thrones.

I got to researching the style. I like to use pinterest, because its a great online tool for moodboarding. The user face is simple, really easy to pin styles and i find the ‘similar images’ function great for this process. The full board can be found HERE.

Screenshot 2018-10-07 23.16.01.png

Luckily i am on the doorstep of wonderful locations, so it didn’t take much researching to find some public areas with views of old mills.

The model lived nearby, so i packed my stuff into the car, just camera kit, and a large sunbounce and then we just waited until we had a nice day.

A couple of hours shooting just before dusk and we got the shot i had wanted, and then a few portfolio fillers for her.

Why you should continue to challenge yourself as a brand marketing photographer

Why should you stay scared?

No, I don’t mean scared like the bubbling undercurrent of impending doom brought on by every single action taken by the current sitting president of the United States.

Nor do i mean the utter terror i feel encountering any kind of spider , except this one:

Now i don’t want to sound like a self-help touting instagram lifestyle blogging preacher here…. But …. I do genuinely believe it is good to keep yourself scared.

Here is why:

Only The ‘Unknown’ is Scary

Can you remember what it felt like to drive for the first time, your first job interview out of school, or buying your first home? Or any other lifetime first which scared the hell out of you, but now you feel fine doing these things because they are not unknown anymore.

When i passed my driving test (When i was 26), within the first few months i was required to drive to Central London in a people carrier with 4 others, a whole load of stock and equipment for a two day shoot as a Brand ambassador photographer, with celebrity ambassadors. I was absolutely bricking it. But i am so glad that i was thrown in at the deep end like that – because i know people who have been driving for 10 years and won’t even go on motorway, let alone weave around cyclists in piccadilly circus at rush hour. When you have done something once, it’s not scary anymore… so keep pushing out further and further until one day there will be nothing that seems daunting.

Fear of Failure

Fear of failure cause us to stagnate in situations of less than optimal productivity and growth. It is the reason people stay in jobs they hate, loveless relationships and often don’t leave the town they grew up in. Fear of failing is understandable, but in most scenarios the failure will not be life changing, so it is worth the risk.

Always be mindful of risk versus reward, don’t take large risks for small return.

I am not advocating being reckless.

However, a lot can be gained from facing the fear of failure and just getting out and creating.

I have had a few High Pressure shoots where the fear of failure has been nearly paralysing in the build up to the actual event. Even for a seasoned Brand ambassador photographer, the anticipation of the event, not knowing 100% how it will tun out, new locations, new crew and new situations can lead to anxiety about the outcome. But do you know what? Even the shoots where i have been unhappy with the end result have been way more successful than my fear-brain thought they would be.

Professional and Personal Development

Stepping out of your comfort zone enough to get those little butterflies fluttering around in your stomach means that your are trying something new. Yes, you may fail. Actually, statistically you WILL fail at some point, probably pretty heavily, but failures are where we gain the most learning. Steven Kotler, a contributor for Forbes stated: “Creatives fail and the really good ones fail often,” . The more we push ourselves to try new things, especially things which are unknown, the more we learn and grow in confidence. The skillset improves the more it is tested. Your knowledge expands by being in new situations. We meet new people and we expand our horizons.

I look back on the work i created 10 years ago, and whilst some of it was okay, i think the vast majority is utter crap. At the time i thought i was doing okay, but time spent expanding my horizons, working on my skillset as a Brand marketing photographer, learning and trying new things has meant that my viewpoint now is completely different

Creativity

Pushing outside of your comfort zone and into the unknown, forces you to get creative. New levels of creativity can be found just outside that little patch where you normally exist. The people who conquer their fears of the new are the ones who push boundaries, and create new, exciting projects / products. If you feel that you are stagnating and your creativity is suffering, here are some steps you can take:

  • Collaborate with others – bounce off each other to create new ideas
  • Get out and about – Go for a walk somewhere new
  • Do some exercise – Raise your heart rate, good for your general health and for your brain.
  • Unplug your phone – Seriously, get off social media, stop looking at cat memes.
  • Listen to music
  • Get Started – Don’t be afraid to start with something mediocre. Just get working and it will come. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ idea.
  • Randomise – ask a friend to pick a theme, or pick a page in a book.

Good For Your Health

Being scared can have excellent health benefits. A slightly raised heartbeat and increases blood pressure, a small hit of adrenaline keeps us alert and ready for anything, oxytocin released helps bonding with friends and colleagues.

Not to mention, if you are regularly scaring yourself, then you are likely experiencing a varied life which will increase happiness.

Puma SS18 – Brand Marketing Photography

Behind the shoot on a Puma athleisure shoot.

Big brands are, quite rightly, protective of their image and what you produce on a shoot it representative of them and their vision, ethos and identity. It is so ultimately important that, as a brand marketing photographer, what you produce is in line with this whilst also maintaining your own identity and keeping clarity on your vision.

Here is the interesting thing; when working with a brand and a retailer on the same shoot, they may have slightly conflicting briefs – and somehow you have to produce a finished product which encapsulates both the brands feel and identity and the can be utilised effectively by the retailer.

I will be discussing briefly my recent shoot with the brand Puma, for use by the retailer Sports Direct.

Here are abridged versions of the briefs:

RETAILER briefs for the shoot:

  • Street style –steps/underpass

  • Lighting to be quite natural with a raw feel

  • Play around with angles of the shots –shots from below to showcase the underpass

Screenshot 2018-06-26 21.42.03.pngScreenshot 2018-06-26 21.42.37.png

Brand brief for the shoot:

  • Powerful, streetwise, and strong.

  • Warm color temperature, black areas and shadows should have detail and look a little color-washed.

  • capture natural light / Open shade

  • Keep it interesting. Use perspective and a strong vantage point to keep the product/model the focus of the image.

  • A view to it being like a more urban ‘en pointe’.

Okay, so to summerise, they collectively want an urban edgy feel, in a specific location, with slightly washed out shadows, and i should also mention that the range is called ‘THE PASTEL RANGE’.

I have 10 years experience in brand marketing photography, so In my head at this point, i already know where we’re going with this. Its a pretty good comprehensive brief, which isn’t too split down the middle with the differences between Brand Photography and Photography for Retail.

Here is where the wealth experience comes in to play, because:

  • I have seen two photos of the location, but will not get chance for a recce.

    • I have to use my instincts and experience as a natural light photographer to guide me with what equipment to take, and plan shots for an 8 hr shoot in the hour it takes to do the hair an make up on location.
  • It is forecast rain and cloud.

    • So it will be grey and dark, colours will be muted (not the end of the world).
    • The location is under cover so thats not too bad.
    • The brief is ‘natural light’ so my experience as a studio photographer will help me pick my additional back up lighting with a view to mimicking this in the event i need to supplement the natural light.
  • The main kicker of the location is the green roof.

    • Pretty tricky to do a whole shoot focused around a roof, so for brand marketing photography, we need to get that into play as much as possible, without overplaying the low angle too much and ruining the shoot.

So, here are a few of the images from the shoot, below:

I will be posting some notes on Post Production in general, but as an overview, the post here was just a general cleanup, and softening on the shadows as requested by the brand, with a pastel overlay to really soften it up and give it the ‘en pointe’ feel.

10 Reasons to Fall in Love with Natural Light Photography

10 reasons to fall in love with natural light photography

The Natural Light Versus Studio Light debate is always a fiery one. Some  Studio photographers are firmly in their indoor camp surrounded by their studio flash, a fort of softboxes with a diffuser brolly roof. Whilst others (Natural light photographers) wander freely in nature, warmed by the sun and weighed by only their camera.

Okay, i am joking there a little. Most photographers will have a preference, but great photographers have mastered both.

I was firmly in the studio camp for a while, turned off from natural light photography by the prevalence of amateur photographers posing as professionals with poorly light outdoor headshots, and distasteful ‘nudes in rivers’. I stayed in my studio camp for so long because at least you can’t fake that. As a studio photographer You can’t get by without knowledge in the studio where everything about the aesthetic is easily within your control. I revelled in creating intricate lighting setups and experimenting with different styles in the safety of that little room.

However,  a few recent shoots have rekindled my love of natural light and i want to share with you why i love it so much, and i am so glad to have rediscovered it’s beauty.

1. Natural Light = Packing Light …. Sometimes.

As a photographer that spends most of my time doing studio lit projects, i often find myself looking like a packhorse, with kilos and kilos of equipment strapped to my back. I have had shoots with such complicated lighting requests that it required an extra person on the crew just to help with carrying. Taking this much equipment has a knock on effect when your travelling for a shoot. Getting the train into Central London is quick and efficient; driving a giant mum-mobile (because it will fit the 7 cases of lighting and photography paraphernalia) is time consuming, tiring and BORING.

Having all your lighting needs being supplied by mother nature allows you to leave the luggage in the studio and travel light. Having said that, don’t get too comfortable with your lack of packing. If your planning a shoot in natural light, as a Natural light photographer, you need to do your research. Factors such as ; what direction the sun will be coming from, how long you’ll have sun for, and the general weather conditions will have a huge impact on the outcome of the images. There are a few great phone apps which can help photographers envisage where the sun will be at various times of the day (For me, sun seeker is the real winner with it’s augmented reality view) If the conditions are not going to be optimum then you will need to bring modifiers, additional lighting and potentially postpone the shoot for a day when the weather will be better.

2. Freedom to Move Your Feet.

Location shoot photographer horse

Shooting in the studio is a pretty simple affair. Studio Photographers often spend time before the actual shoot getting the lighting just right before the shoot actually commences so that everything runs smoothly on the day. There’s not a huge amount of variables in play on the actual shoot – so other than some minor fine tuning, you will tend to be within the same couple of feet for the shoot.

Shooting on location with lighting is a whole other kettle of fish. There is often a lot of scope for moving around to get different angles and backdrops when you’re on location – but being weighed down with that much equipment is a drag. If you have lighting in play on a location shoot then each move around the location can take a little while to physically move the lights and re-adjust the lighting. Shooting using natural light can open up the creative flow a bit more, The Natural light photographer has the freedom to chop and change angles, move around the subject to capture different lighting styles and backdrops.

For the shot above, we had been following the model and horse around the location on foot, and found this beautiful little pocket of shade on a lane. We had the freedom to stop and shoot for a while because we weren’t bogged down with kit.

3. Photographing in natural light is a Challenge.

behind the scenes photoshoot sun block

Run_SS17_closeup_portrait_crop.jpg

Always be wary of a Natural light photographer that says they ‘only use available light’. That is code for ‘i don’t know how lighting works’. And as a photographer, if you don’t know lighting; you don’t know photography. New photographers often use shooting outside as a cover for not understanding how controlled lighting works…. but i guarantee you, if they don’t understand how to read the light, and modify it to their needs then the images will suffer.

Shooting in natural light can be a dream so long as you understand how it works. If you are unsure of how to utilise it, natural light can be a photographers worst nightmare. Shooting in bad lighting conditions can test your ability to problem solve to the limit. As Natural light photographers, we must research the conditions as much as you can, and if they aren’t going to be right then take additional lighting – but even with the research, you’re still going in blind most of the time and you will have to think on your feet to get the optimal results. You have to be flexible to work with the light moving and changing throughout the day, work with the surrounding and your modifiers to help shape the light to your advantage.

In the above images we are blocking the direct sunlight from the models face whilst allowing the light to fall on the wall behind her, taking the harshness from her face whilst keeping the pop of light behind her.

4. Bang up that Shutterspeed.

runner sunlight boardwalk location photographer

With the advancement of new technologies including, mirrorless cameras and the introduction of the rolling shutter high speed sync lighting, allowing us to shoot at high shutter speeds,  this point carries a little less weight. However, there are still a lot of photographers whose kit limits them to shoot flash at 1/250. Bright daylight allows the Natural light photographer to bump that shutter speed all the way up, great for capturing high speed action in a natural settings. Sports photographers have been utilising the giant light in the sky since the dawn of photography (well, not quite the dawn because high shutter speeds weren’t developed until the 1930s, by Eastman Kodak.)

5. Outdoor photography is a Bargain!

Model street photography candid fashion

Okay, so i’m going to be brutally honest here: You can make ANY shoot expensive. Some clients will LOVE to spend money and I am totally on board with having all the creature comforts, great catering, a team of 10 and a base camp to go for a wee. However, my point here is that you CAN shoot outdoors on the cheap, and the natural light photographer knows this. Public spaces can often be used without incurring any costs whatsoever, as long as the team is small and nothing is on the floor (Please always check the local councils rules on this, and check the area you want to shoot is not privately owned). Many beautiful privately owned spaces can be booked for much smaller costs than indoor locations.

The low cost of shooting outside doesn’t come just from a lack of location fee. Shooting in natural light can remove the need for masses of equipment (potentially rental and transport costs), less stuff can equal less crew (especially for video), less time spent messing around with lighting and equipment means more time shooting and creating content and the ability to create a wider range of content without individual costs per location. All these are benefits which great for us, but also benefit the client massively.

6. Natural light is Real.

tattoo model natural light photographer location fashion rock biker portrait

Pinging direct sunlight for a Swimwear shoot. Soft window light for flowy gowns. Cloudy street style imagery for athleisure brands. Sunlight is real and raw, and capturing it in its many forms has an un-nameable quality of authenticity which cannot be recreated in a studio setting. Yes, we can try. And many well known studio photographers have built solid careers on faking daylight in a studio (annie leibowitz comes to mind). However, the allure of the daylight candid can’t be beaten.

7. Natural light comes in many different forms.

swimwear fashion photoshoot desert sun

Daylight takes many forms and it is utmost priority that you book the shoot with a specific light in mind. Hard direct sunlight with a glorious blue sky. A misty morning with warm greys. Indirect northern light through a window. The golden glow of a sunset. Each of these have their own merits and their own pitfalls, so let a professional Natural light photographer guide you with the timings and location, as they will have experience. They also lend themselves towards specific looks for fashion and commercial photography so it is important to understand what you are wanting to achieve before you set out to shoot.

8. It’s versatile – bounce it, fill it, block it, diffuse it.

IMG_5659

Raw natural light (especially at midday) can be thoroughly unflattering and downright ugly. The trick is to modify that light, by diffusing, blocking and bouncing the light around the subject until it’s taken the shape you require. Finding shade from nearby buildings or trees can suitable block midday sun, but you still need to ensure that your model is ‘finding the light’. A Natural light photographer knows shooting in natural light is mainly about ‘reading’ the light. Seeing the light for how it really looks in person, without being distracted by the other elements in the photo. So often i see a wonderfull shots taken by photographers where the light on the models face is off. Its so easy to caught up in the buzz of creativity shooting outside, but remembering to keep your eye on the light at all times will save hours of post production later.

9. One Man Band.

I love the atmosphere when we shoot with a big production team. Having so many creatives on site makes for a great shoot. But in natural light, crew size can be smaller. I recently did a test shoot with a model in leeds and i literally went on my own, with just a rucksak on my bag with lenses, cards and batteries . When i am working as a Natural light photographer i have the freedom to shrug off a large crew in favour of creating an intimate collaboration between photographer and model.

10. The Golden Hour

swimwear model golden hour photoshoot bali photographer

I have left this one til last because it. is. a. BIGGIE. The most glorious thing about shooting in daylight is those two little periods at the beginning and the end of the day. Sunrise and sunset can yield some of the most beautiful light. I will not profess to be an expert on the physics of the Golden Hour, but i can attest to its ease of shooting. The warm, soft light lowers the contrast of highlights and shadows and creates a misty feel. When i am working as a Natural light photographer, i like to go even further, and i would recommend shooting all the way through that sunset and right on after the sun has set and dusk has begun. Dusk and dawn light really is something to behold.

The shot above was taken as the sun was setting down really low. At this point the sky is very orange and the light is golden and still quite bright. Just a few moments later, the sun had completely set and i took the below image which is much softer, with a darker grey and blue toned background whilst still maintaining a soft orange tone to the light on the skin. You have to borderline the settings to get this result, but goodness its worth it.

dusk fashion portrait photoshoot bali golden hour

So, maybe you are still firmly in the studio camp, but if you’re even slightly tempted, i hope you will venture outside and enjoy the glorious gift of our natural sunlight. I am hoping to free my inner Natural light photographer and get out there more in the summer months and shoot some airy portraits and fiery sunsets myself, so if you’re a model, creative or potential client reading this and you’re thinking about collaborating then get in touch and lets go outside!
